1708 Gallery is pleased to welcome Matt Shelton as our new Gallery Coordinator!
Matt Shelton began working for 1708 after earning an MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2012. From September 2011 to March 2012, Matt worked as an instructor for 1708′s Arts for All outreach program, teaching a mural painting course for clients of Richmond’s Offender Aid and Restoration. Matt moved to Richmond from New Orleans, where he was Director of the Art Program at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in New Orleans and volunteered for Creative Time’s site-specific producion of Waiting for Godot in New Orleans. A 2011-2012 VMFA Graduate Fellowship recipient, Matt will participate in artist Lisi Raskin’s Motorpark project at the Maine College of Art ICA in Portland this summer, and looks forward to teaching a course on art and social justice at VCU in the fall. ext. 1708, 1708 Gallery’s new online journal, is made possible through funding by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, which also supports 1708 Gallery’s exhibitions. The journal features essays, interviews and other writings that provide context for 1708’s exhibitions and promote further dialogue about contemporary art. The gallery works with a range of writers, from graduate students to professional writers, to allow for multiple voices and experiences to contribute to this project.

In preparation for InLight Richmond 2012, we will be hosting an all-day, hands-on lantern-making workshop at Cultsha Xpo. Bring your family and friends and join us! This is the first in a series of lantern making workshops organized by 1708 Gallery. Workshops will take place throughout the summer and fall in preparation for the Community Lantern Parade that kicks off InLight Richmond 2012. InLight Richmond 2012 will take place at its inaugural location along the broad street arts corridor.

The Cultsha Xpo is an explosion of the arts, history, science, and family fun for the Richmond Region – all under one roof on one day. The day features:

LOOK3 will kick-off with a special presentation from National Geographic underwater photographer David Doubilet, whose iconic images will hang from the trees in Charlottesville. This year LOOK3 is celebrating legendary photographers Stanley Greene, Donna Ferrato, and Alex Webb, who will take the stage to present their life’s work and share the stories behind their photographs. LOOK3 will also present a myriad of other artists during the Master Talks lectures and the Shots and Works outdoor projection events.

1708 Galleryorganizes satellite exhibitions for Linden Row Inn, a historic inn located at 100 East Franklin Street in downtown Richmond. Part of our curatorial mission for this venue is to show contemporary art that complements and revitalizes Linden Row’s historic interior and unique architecture.
The French Connection III is 1708′s current exhibition now on display at Linden Row until August. Showcasing a group of artists who have all been honored with a residency at the Cité Internationale des Artes in Paris, France, this traveling exhibition finds its third incarnation in Richmond’s own Linden Row Inn. Representing voices from both the United States and abroad, it is a show of connections across time periods and national borders.

After months of hard work and dedication1708 Gallery is pleased to announce the official unveiling ceremony for the mural that was created in partnership with OAR Richmond is set for, Wednesday, April 25th, 6:00 p.m. at Central Parking Deck, 3rd St. and Main St. directly across the street from OAR. Refreshments will be served and this ceremony will be a chance to meet some of the artists who were involved in the murals creation. 1708 Gallery’s latest outreach program, Arts for All, paired artist Matthew Shelton, MFA candidate (2012) in VCU’s Department of Painting & Printmaking, with the clients of Richmond’s OAR, which serves individuals and families affected by incarceration.
Through a series of workshops focused on investigating public art, the group has designed and produced a mural that tells a story of redemption.
