1708 Gallery is pleased to present a screening of the award-winning documentary, I Am, by VCU Professor Sonali Gulati on December 16th. The film features Gulati’s return to New Dehli eleven years after the death of her mother, to whom she never came out as a lesbian, in an effort to confront the past. On her five year journey, Gulati interviewed twenty-one Indian families, revealing the difficulties of coming out and its effects on family life. I Am raises important questions and inspires crucial discussions about gay rights in India where homosexuality was decriminalized only two years ago.
I Am has been featured in film festivals all over the world and has received several awards, including Best Documentary at the Queer Lisboa Festival and theĀ Grand Jury Prize, Audience Award and Best Documentary Feature at the Asian Film Festival of Dallas.
