TELLING TALES presents video by Sara Pomerance, Lydia Moyer, Jennifer Sullivan, and Keren Cytter. Each employs specific narrative devices to explore a variety of themes from relationships to cultural phenomena.
Join 1708 on Saturday, February 4 at 11:00 AM for the final screening of all 4 artists’ works, including a Q&A with Sara Pomerance and Lydia Moyer.
Sara Pomerance, Everything is Under Control (Running time: 27:11)
Part home movies, part staged scenes, Sara Pomerance’s string of mundane, everyday exchanges between family members poignantly combines humor and pathos.
Followed by a 10 minute Q&A with Sara Pomerance.
Lydia Moyer, Paradise(Running time: 36:09)
Lydia Moyer examines five sites of societal and environmental disasters, from Jonestown, Guyana to post-Katrina New Orleans, and hints at, though often without fully revealing, the dark stories that inhabit these locations.
Followed by a 10 minute Q&A with Lydia Moyer.
Jennifer Sullivan, Adult Movie and One-Week Walden (Running time: 35:00)
In Jennifer Sullivan’s videos, the artist turns the camera on herself in two semi-autobiographical works that address, in tongue-in-cheek fashion, an artistic struggle for depth of purpose and authenticity.
Keren Cytter, Four Seasons and Konstruktion (Running time: 20:08)
Drawing from an archive of influences that includes soap operas and Michelangelo Antonioni, Keren Cytter’s fragmented, non-linear style conveys situations of anxiety and distress in relationships, often imparting a sense of anxiety in the viewer.
1708 Gallery is pleased to present a screening of the award-winning documentary, I Am, by VCU Professor Sonali Gulati on December 16th. The film features Gulati’s return to New Dehli eleven years after the death of her mother, to whom she never came out as a lesbian, in an effort to confront the past. On her five year journey, Gulati interviewed twenty-one Indian families, revealing the difficulties of coming out and its effects on family life. I Am raises important questions and inspires crucial discussions about gay rights in India where homosexuality was decriminalized only two years ago.
I Am has been featured in film festivals all over the world and has received several awards, including Best Documentary at the Queer Lisboa Festival and the Grand Jury Prize, Audience Award and Best Documentary Feature at the Asian Film Festival of Dallas. For the trailer, reviews, and more information about the film, click HERE.
Please join us for this special event on Friday, December 16th. Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. and the film will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m. A Q&A session with the filmmaker will follow the screening. There will be light refreshments and a cash bar. Admission is $8 per person and can be purchased in advance HERE. Seating is limited and expected to sell out so please purchase your admission early. Proceeds benefit the filmmaker as well as 1708 Gallery.

For all of those out there who have a degree in art, are currently working on getting a degree in art, or just happen to love art and want to make a career out of it, this is a great opportunity for learning from others who have made a career for themselves:
“The College Art Association (CAA), in partnership with the School of the Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCUarts), will present its next National Professional-Development Workshop for Artists at the Grace Street Theater on Saturday, October 1, 2011. The one-day event, called “Toolkit for a Sustainable Life in the Arts: Ideas XS, S, M, L, XL,” will explore strategies for launching, renewing, and sustaining a career in the arts.”
The workshop is free to VCUarts students, faculty, and staff, and $25 for all other participants. Throughout the day you can expect everything from lectures to panels, buffets to networking opportunities, and a final reception at The Anderson Gallery (all included in the registration price, of course). Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis so be sure to register ASAP. Instructions for registration, more detailed information, and a schedule can be found at the CAA’s Workshops site. Any questions regarding the workshops should be directed to: Susan Schear, CAA national workshop project consultant, at 973-482-1000.
