Liz Miller: Artist Talk & Exhibition Opening for July 15, 2011.

Monday, June 27th, 2011

Come join us on Friday, July 15 for the opening reception of our newest exhibition by Minnesota artist Liz Miller! We invite you to enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres and a glass of wine with friends while Liz Miller offers some insight into her work. The reception will go from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will feature a talk by the artist at 6:30 p.m. The exhibition will remain on view through Saturday, August 20.

Liz Miller, detail of Repetitive Deception Scheme

In Illusive Insurgency, Miller offers a narrative about the contemporary “dilemma of unchecked growth.” Miller’s shapes and forms suggest the profound beauty of flora-like forms and charge the exhibit with a seductive power. However, “through their proliferation and movement,” Miller explains, “these forms suggest a more ominous narrative; one that would ultimately envelop and encroach on the viewer through a combination of two-dimensional and sculptural forms.”

Miller configures her repetitive forms and shapes to transform the space of the gallery. The expansive scale and space-altering dimension of her installation stand as metaphors for “issues such as environmental devastation and population growth.”

Liz Miller resides in Southern Minnesota, where she teaches drawing at Minnesota State University-Mankato. She earned her BFA from Rhode Island School of Design and her MFA from the University of Minnesota. Miller has exhibited her work nationally and internationally in solo and group exhibitions, and is the recipient of a Jerome Foundation Fellowship as well as two Artist Initiative Grants from Minnesota State Arts Board. Miller’s work is included in two books: Tactile: High Touch Visuals and Nature: Inspiration for Art & Design. For more information on Liz Miller and her work, please visit: www.lizmillerart.com.

Greg Stewart Exhibition Opening on June First Friday!

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

1708 Gallery’s next exhibition will open during the First Friday Art Walk on June 3. Meet Greg Stewart and view his show, Engine of Bones Man the Handyman, during our open reception from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., featuring complementary appetizers and a cash bar. An artist’s talk will take place on the following first Friday, July 1st, at 7 p.m.

Engine of Bones Man the Handyman is inspired by the role of humans in a partially imaginary world dominated by migration and survival. Stewart’s portable structures—small fruit trees emerging from the bodies of deer-like forms—are part migrating herd, part sustenance-providing orchard and suggest mutation and movement as a form of adaptability. Also on display will be tools and accessories created from the “hides” of these animals, as well as digital prints documenting them in an urban environment.

For more information about this exhibition, read the press release.

Kevin Jones – Chemtrail + Michael Mcfalls – Recent Works

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

1708 Gallery invites you to experience our two latest exhibitions opening on April 22. Michael McFalls’ “Recent Works” and Kevin Jones’ “Chemtrail” encourage us to take a closer look at our environments and the objects within them. An opening reception will be held on Friday, April 22, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. and will include a talk by the artists at 6:30 p.m., complimentary hors d’oeuvres, and a cash bar. The exhibitions will be on view through Saturday, May 28, 2011.

Michael McFalls’ sculptures combine natural materials and the man-made. He invites the viewer to consider the lingering, or potentially novel, significance of materials that are often taken for granted.

Through digitally produced images and a video installation, Kevin Jones examines systems found in scientific investigation. Jones “seeks to question our understanding of the physical world and to test and undermine scientific authority.”

John Henry Blatter and Stephen Vitiello Discuss Sound Art

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Looking for something to do over the weekend? On Saturday, November 21 from 12 to 1 pm, 1708 Gallery will host a lecture on sound art with current exhibiting artist John Henry Blatter and sound artist Stephen Vitiello. The event is free and open to the public.

New Works by John Henry Blatter is currently on display at 1708 Gallery through Saturday, November 28. Blatter’s work combines the use of sound, video and environment to sculpt an experience in the space he is working in, which is exactly what he has done at 1708 Gallery. New Works features site-specific installation pieces. To learn more about Blatter, visit his website here.

Stephen Vitiello is currently an associate professor of kinetic imaging at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). As an electronic musician and sound artist, Stephen Vitiello transforms the incidental atmospheric noises around us into more mesmerizing soundscapes that alter our perception of the surrounding environment. We hope to see you at 1708 Gallery on Saturday!

Poe’s Playground at Linden Row Inn

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

1708 Gallery organizes small exhibitions for Linden Row Inn, a historic Inn located at 100 East Franklin Street. The work is displayed in their lobby and dining room for guests and the public. Linden Row Inn is part of the First Friday Gallery walk, every first Friday of the month from 7-10 pm.

Poe’s Playground is a collection of work inspired by Poe’s Life, Art and Places he haunted during his lifetime. Young Edgar played in the courtyards of this very inn as a young child. His stories inspire artists to examine what may be creepy, melancholy or a fear as simple as wondering what may lurk under the bed. The exhibition features artists Caryl Burtner, Jamie Burwell Mixon, Mark Chatterley, Kathryn Henry-Choisser, John Moser, Amie Oliver, Noah Scalin and Chris Semtner. Poe’s Playground will be on view until August 25th and will then travel to the Piedmont Arts Center in Martinsville, VA in September of 2010.
