1708 Gallery invites artists working in all media and disciplines, including performance, to submit proposals for InLight Richmond 2013, 1708 Gallery’s 6th annual one-night, public exhibition of light-based art and performance. InLight Richmond 2013 will take place on Friday, November 8 in Shockoe along the Riverfront Canal Walk. The juror for InLight Richmond 2013 is Ken Farmer, Creative Director of Nuit Blanche New York.

The Canal Walk is marked by the intersections of Shockoe Slip and Shockoe Bottom, the Kanawha Canal, the Floodwall, the Richmond Slave Trail, Interstates 95 and 195 and railroad lines. It is bordered by the James River, the Virginia Capital Trail, and numerous retail spaces, bars and restaurants, and business.
Proposals should involve, be inspired by, investigate, or interpret themes of light, from light as medium to light as concept. Additionally,1708 Gallery encourages artists to propose projects that respond to/interact with the site, considering the historic significance of the Canal, Shockoe Bottom and Shockoe Slip.
The geographic and architectural features that characterize the Canal Walk as a place-a knot of river, canals, thoroughfares, rail lines, overpass and expressway-also mark the intersection of Richmond’s economic, social, political and cultural memory. Situated in the margins of transport and trade and alongside the James River, the Canal Walk is also well-suited for ecologically conscious works that illuminate the relationship between natural and human-made environments. Existing work, as well as proposals for new projects, will be considered.
In addition to technical and production support, an honorarium of $300 will be given to each project. All projects are eligible for the Best in Show award ($1500) and the People’s Choice award ($500). Environmentally conscious works are also eligible for the Most Environmentally Conscious award ($1000).
The deadline for submissions is midnight (EST), July 15, 2013.

Calling All Artists for BYOB-RVA
at 1708 Gallery’s InLight Richmond
Friday, November 2, 7 p.m. to midnight
Organized by Norberto Gomez, Jr., BYOB-RVA is a feature of InLight Richmond 2012, 1708 Gallery’s 5th annual public exhibition of light-based art and performances.
BYOB or Bring Your Own Beamer is a series of one-night exhibitions hosting artists and their beamers (projectors). All artists are invited to show work during BYOB-RVA, with the only requirement being they provide their own projector (open to interpretation) and work. Installation is free-form, with artists reacting to the space and their fellow beamers throughout the night.
Beamers, or projectors, may consist of typical digital projectors used by computers or TVs, overhead projectors, or even a child’s toy. Other “screen” materials like computer monitors or televisions are also acceptable. BYOB-RVA is also open to creative interpretations of a “projector,” light & dark as medium, the moving image, music/sound/noise, installation, shadow-performance, etc. Please bring your cords, dvd players, computers, VCR, extra power strips, etc.
First initiated by Rafaël Rozendaal in 2010, over 80 BYOB events have taken place throughout the world, from Berlin and Tokyo, to San Francisco and New York City.
For more information check out the BYOB-RVA Facebook event: http://www.facebook.com/events/531875486838474/ or email Norberto at info@norbertogomezjr.com.

ABOUT THE SITE:
1708 was one of the first organizations to reinvest in this neighborhood, moving to Broad Street in 2001. This former retail center is located in Monroe Ward, bordered to the north by historic Jackson Ward (once known as the “Harlem of the South”), to the east by city and state government buildings, and to the west by Virginia Commonwealth University. Now host to galleries, studios, businesses and restaurants, and the future home of VCU’s Institute of Contemporary Art ( http://ica.vcu.edu), Broad Street has experienced a rebirth. Yet it still retains an urban vitality as thrift stores, record shops and boutiques share the sidewalk with vacant sites and historic properties, and graffiti tags vie with murals.

ext. 1708, 1708 Gallery’s new online journal, is made possible through funding by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, which also supports 1708 Gallery’s exhibitions. The journal features essays, interviews and other writings that provide context for 1708’s exhibitions and promote further dialogue about contemporary art. The gallery works with a range of writers, from graduate students to professional writers, to allow for multiple voices and experiences to contribute to this project.
