Step into the world of a true Fanatic this February with Jillian McDonald’s video, prints, installation, and live interactive performance. Jillian is fixated on the human obsession with horror film genres, the female role in cinema, and celebrities – turning intimate and horrifying moments into satirical drama. This exhibition will highlight the artist’s work from the past five years, which Jillian suggests is best described as “culture-jamming.”

—————————————————————–

The opening for FANATIC was incredible … so many new faces and especially so many viewers engaged in the work …

See Jillian’s blog for more info and images of the exhibition …

New and regular gallery supporters from all over were there …

… And needless to say the TATTOO performance by Jillian was a huge hit!!!

Jillian gave tattoos for 2 1/2 hours … wow, one-on-one consultations from the artist … and free body art to-go … And the artist never stops smiling!!!

Jillian’s assistant & photographer – 1708′s own most valuable player – Garth Fry … Wow, what a great shirt Garth!!!

Don Crow consults with Jillian on tattoo placement …

Racine Russell (Wearable Art 9 & Wearable Art X) is loving her very own Billy Bob ….

Jillian and Amie Oliver both agree – a beautiful display of celebrity fanaticism …

Ahhh … now its Don’s turn …

… All those years of making art and hanging sheetrock really paid off!!!
Jillian agrees … art is good for you!!!

What a great time we all had … and it was all about
the love and the art.

Jillian is the best artist to work with ever!!!

Richmond InLight: Call for Participation

January 26th, 2008
InLight RICHMOND
CALL FOR ENTRIES

1708 Gallery invites artists working in ALL media and disciplines to submit proposals for InLight RICHMOND. Modeled after Paris’ Nuit Blanche, InLight RICHMOND is an all-night celebration of 1708 Gallery’s 30th anniversary and Richmond’s first annual light-inspired contemporary arts happening.

From 7pm, Friday September 5, 2008 to 2am, Saturday, September 6, the 300, 200 and 100 blocks of W. Broad Street in Richmond, VA will serve as sites for art works. Various locations within these blocks have been identified as primary and secondary sites: for instance walls, parking lots, storefronts, doorways, median strips. For details and images of sites, please click here. Artists are also welcome to explore roving performances/installations (i.e. the street as canvas). Select sites will showcase installations that remain on view throughout the evening as well as works that can remain on view through November 3 and possibly longer). Others sites will target performances and installations that will rotate over the course of the night.

The event will be a spectacle of multi-media installations and performances. Light is the theme, so all work proposed should be inspired by light in some way. Any interpretation of light is welcome, from light as medium to light as abstract idea. Interdisciplinary projects are encouraged but not required. We will consider existing work, as well as proposals for new projects. InLight also welcomes, but does not require, green practices.

Each of the sites will have certain technical and electrical provisions available to the artists. Technical specs for each of the sites will be listed on our site link. Any technical needs (equipment and/or electricity) beyond what is available for each location should be provided by the artist and should be detailed in the proposal. To view possible sites and to view technical specs please visit this link. Please note: sites depicted on are website are proposed at this time and are pending formal agreements.

All proposals will be reviewed by a panel of 1708 Gallery representatives and distinguished jurors. Artists may submit multiple proposals, and if accepted, may show multiple works at the event. A Best In Show prize will be awarded, along with other recognitions and awards. The proposals of selected finalists will be on view at 1708 Gallery during the last week of April. New Struggles at Second Street Gallery

January 24th, 2008

For February, SSG presents works by artist Rob Tarbell in the Dové Gallery. Tarbell’s animal sculptures-mostly rabbits and bears-take on a life of their own, often humorous and suggestive of play. The multi-step process Tarbell uses to make the creatures represents a transformation: well-loved stuffed animals found at Goodwill assume new forms as their stuffing is replaced with porcelain slip and then fired in a kiln. The resulting unconventional figures evoke childhood memories as they explore notions of cremation and preservation, where the original’s fur becomes threatening ceramic spikes. Nearly two-dozen sculptures will be on display, creating a tongue-in-cheek environment of animated characters.

The Struggles Play Nice is on view at Second Street Gallery, 115 Second Street SE, February 1 – March 1, 2008. There will be an opening reception for First Fridays, February 1, 6:00 – 8:00 pm, with an artist talk at 6:30. Rob Tarbell: The Struggles Play Nice is sponsored by the L.E.A.W. Family Foundation.

JANUARY 4-26,
2008

OPENING FRIDAY, JANUARY 4, 2008
FROM 7-10 PM

To look past the surfaces of Kai
Richter, Kathy Snow Stratton, and Merrill Shatzman takes great effort from their viewers. In an intense process of repeating forms – line, space, language, object – these artists lead the viewer into a maze of obsession, not excluding any detail. We first see these objects as a whole made from parts and through these parts the viewer experiences infinity. We remain motionless and disjointed from the object or picture. Yet, in our search to find a way through the maze we find our own obsession, and the feeling of being completely disconnected from that that looks at us.
