Exquisite Corpse Opening October 2, 2014 from 1708 Gallery on Vimeo.
1708 Gallery is pleased to present Exquisite Corpse, a silent auction fundraiser featuring works created by nationally recognized artists from Richmond and beyond in the spirit of the Surrealist game of the same name.
Exquisite Corpse was a chance-based parlor game invented by the Surrealists for which artists collaborated on drawings without seeing each others’ contributions. For the Surrealists, this tapped into their interest in a collective unconscious.
Bidding on the Exquisite Corpse works will begin during the preview reception on October 2nd with works starting at $300. Funds raised through the auction will support the future growth and programming of 1708 Gallery as it continues to provide a space for early career artists to realize new work.
EXQUISITE CORPSE MURAL
One of the events taking place in conjunction with Exquisite Corpse is the creation of a mural-sized exquisite corpse directly on the back gallery wall during the first three days of the exhibition. This piece will be created by artists Genesis Chapman, Rosemary Jesionowski, and Michael Pierce. Gallery visitors are welcome to come watch the artists and observe their process as they create this work that will be on display for the duration of Exquisite Corpse.
FAMILY DAY
On Saturday, October 18, 1708 will host a Family Day. Fun for all ages, this event will include making your own exquisite corpse, lantern making, a Monster Drawing Rally sidewalk sale, sidewalk chalk, balloons, and sweet treats.
DAY OF THE DEAD PARTY
The silent auction will conclude on Saturday, November 1 with a Day of The Dead party. Tickets for this event will be sold for $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Entry will include entertainment, food, and a cash bar.
Purchase admission to the Day of the Dead party in advance through the secure PayPal button below or call 804.643.1708.

Exquisite Corpse was inspired by long-time 1708 supporters Jay Barrows and Cindy Neuschwander. Neuschwander, who passed away in December 2012, was a member of the initial planning committee. Her spirit is very much alive in the fantastic work and the collaborations across many artists that the project engendered.
Exqusite Corpse is generously sponsored in part by Fan Frame & Fine Art and Jay Barrows.
