VINTAGE FRAMES, FRESH FREQUENCIES
September 5 – October 26, 2025

Vintage Frames, Fresh Frequencies Afrikana: A Decade in Review is the celebration of a decade of Afrikana Film Festival — a time capsule of memory, movement, and Black cinematic magic. It’s about the stories that brought us here and the vibrations that are leading us into what’s next.
As we mark this milestone of 10 unforgettable years, we invite you to remember. To stroll down memory lane with us as we salute the dedicated collective that built Afrikana. The artists who trusted us. The audiences who showed up. The team who stayed committed. The city that embraced a vision. From local roots to global reach, Afrikana has grown through the hearts, hands, and hopes of many.
What began in 2014 as intimate film screenings in galleries throughout our city has grown into a movement that has brought over 600 Black independent films to Richmond and beyond. We’ve activated film to ignite perspective-shifting conversations, inspire creative movements, build connections that transform strangers into collaborators, and invite community to become family. A testament to the magic that happens when we gather.
We invite you to make magic with us again as we press play on some of Afrikana’s most loved short films over the last 10 years in our Fresh Frequencies Theatre and relive some of the joyful moments in our Afrikana “photo album”.
We hope this space conjures up memories of the good stuff as we revisit the moments and the movies that laid Afrikana’s foundation. It is our love letter to the people, stories, and collective effort that have shaped this journey. It’s also a call to the future that’s unfolding, and a reminder that we’re listening intently as we explore fresh ways to elevate, celebrate, and validate the Black experience.
