Present Perfect asks how to move forward when the present feels dictated by an impermeable past and the future appears increasingly calcified: a collapse of destiny into fate. Handmade paper, the exhibition’s primary medium, considers this question through its unlimited reprocessing potential, which allows artworks to remain materially unchanged while adapting to new forms.

The majority of the works presented here have been reconstituted from older installations or have been previously displayed, carrying with them traces of their prior contexts and interpretations. Concept and purpose evolve throughout an artwork’s lifespan, rooted in past identities while retaining the potential to change.

Alongside sculptural installations, handmade paper works are embedded directly into the gallery walls, obfuscating the boundary between self and environment. Inspired by color field paintings, these works simultaneously emerge from and are absorbed by their surroundings, maintaining a distinct identity while consciously adapting to their present context.

Through repetition, material reprocessing, and site responsivity, Whitfield considers how our environments force narratives to evolve to the point of contradiction, eliciting false confessions born from honest intentions. Isabella Whitfield is a multidisciplinary artist born and based in Virginia, working in papermaking, sculpture, and site-responsive installation. Her work explores how object functionalities and histories can be abstracted through material, repetition, and context. Whitfield received BAs in Sculpture and Politics from the University of Virginia, where she was an Aunspaugh Art Fellow.

Whitfield was a fellow with Hamiltonian Artists, Papermaking Associate with Pyramid Atlantic, and has been a resident artist with Penland School of Craft, Anderson Ranch, Ox-Bow, Pyramid Atlantic, VisArts Richmond, and VisArts (Rockville). Whitfield is currently a Core Fellow at Penland.
