New Faces III features selected works by recipients of the Cindy Neuschwander Scholarship, which was created in 2013 to honor the memory, generosity of spirit, and artistic talents of Cindy Neuschwander. An alumnus of VCUarts and a past-president of 1708 Gallery, Cindy’s enthusiasm and love of contemporary art still inspire us today. Her work is represented by Reynolds Gallery and is held in the collections of Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Federal Reserve Bank, Chrysler Museum of Art, and Mint Museum of Art to name just a few.
The Neuschwander scholarship was created by Cindy’s husband and curator, Jay Barrows and is facilitated by 1708 Gallery. It seeks to recognize high school students who are talented, passionate, dedicated and show a willingness to explore and discover art in meaningful ways. Awarded to graduating high school seniors who plan to study studio art at the college or university level, this scholarship is based on artistic merit with preference for students who demonstrate a need for additional financial resources. The Cindy Neuschwander Scholarship has helped 46 students with over $48,000 in funding for education so far.
New Faces III showacases paintings, photographs, sculptures, and mixed media artworks by Miles Owen Barnett, Ari Calos, Riley Hammond, Kathleen Hennessee, Fletcher Johnson, Ella Konefal, Emily Lingg, Richard Liu, Samuel Richardson, Adam Santiago, Eli Scaparo, Isabelle Scheerer, Emily Setelin, and Shahar Smith. This collection of artists demonstrates a rich diversity of talent, skill, and possibilities that reflect the goals of the Neuschwander Scholarship.
In correlation with this exhibition, Cindy Neuschwander retrospectives are being held at 1708 Gallery (July 5 – August 18) and Reynolds Gallery (June 13 – July).
