Light Gets In

(homage to Leonard Cohen, from "Anthem")
You can add up the parts
You won't have the sum

You can strike up the march
There is no drum

Every heart
Every heart to love will come
But like a refugee

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering

There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in

Susan T. Rivers is a former Wall Street Journal editor and corporate communicator who has lived and worked in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. She earned a degree in photography at Trinity University in Washington, D.C., and was awarded a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship to photo-document rural villages in France, Ireland and Quebec. She worked as a writer and editor for 30 years at several major news outlets, culminating with The Wall Street Journal. Susan has exhibited her photographs and mixed media work at Art for the Journey, Art Works, Art Space Gallery, the Boyd Realty Gallery, the FemLens international online gallery, and Pine Camp Cultural Arts and Community Center. Deeply affected by her multicultural travel and troubled by widespread social and economic disparities, she creates work that explores the complicated interplay of pain and healing in our shared humanity. Through use of color, contrast, and texture, her art exhibits a wide range of styles and media, all driven by a common theme: Creative truth must embrace both the grit and glow of everyday life.
